Dermoid tumors, often present at birth, contain structures like hair, fluid, teeth and skin glands. These cysts are slow growing but depending on location can create several neurological issues can be presented. If these tumors rupture they can cause aseptic meningitis.
Signs and symptoms of dermoid tumors
Because these cysts are present at birth and slow growing, symptoms don’t occur for several decades. Typical symptoms often start with a headache, but become more symptomatic with time.

- Rupture – leakage of sebum resulting in aseptic meningitis
- Hydrophyllum
- Seizures
Treatments
When dermoid tumors become symptomatic, surgical excision is performed to remove the growth with follow up steroid treatments.
