Spinal Intradural, Extramedellary Tumors

Intradural, extramedullary tumors are for the most part either meningioma, schwannomas, and possibly ependymomas. While most intradural extramedullary tumors are benign, these tumors cause neurological damage by compressing on the spinal cord and nerve roots. Patients usually will need surgery and/or radiation.

Symptoms

Pain is an early symptom of intradural extramedullary tumors, however when these grow they result in compression the spinal cord and nerves. This causes:
  • Localized spine pain
  • Limb dysfunctions
  • Loss of motor skills and sensations
  • Bowel and bladder dysfunction
  • Pain in back at night
  • If compression is chronic, muscle wasting can occur along the affected nerve roots.
